Hans-Erich Voss

Voss graduated from the German Naval Academy in 1917. In 1942, he was commander of the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen.

Voss was present at Wolfsschanze in the briefing room when the conspirators attempted to assassinate Hitler on 20 July 1944.

He became a recipient of the Wounded Medal ( Das Verwundetenabzeichen , 20 July 1944). His medal was upgraded to silver and finally gold, because he was wounded several times after the initial award. Voss was the only member of the Wehrmacht to receive all three insignia.

As Kriegsmarine Staff Link Officer, Voss accompanied Hitler, Goebbels, and their escorts in the Führerbunker.

He was captured by the Red Army and taken to the bunker for interrogation to identify the charred bodies of Joseph and Magda Goebbels and the corpses of their children. In 1952 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but in December 1954 he was released and handed over to the East German authorities.

Voss died in Berchtesgaden in Bavaria in 1969.
